WNUSP Anniversary of milestones: Embracing our core position on human rights

The World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry (WNUSP) is happy to invite you to celebrate several anniversaries with us.

25 years ago, in 1991, the first world-wide network of users and survivors of psychiatry began in Mexico, where a group of survivors gathered at the World Federation of Mental Health conference and formed the World Federation of Psychiatric Users (WFPU). The name was changed to World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry, WNUSP, in 1997.

15 years ago, in 2001, the Initial Congress, the First General Assembly of WNUSP took place in Vancouver, Canada. The WNUSP Statutes were adopted and signed, and core values and principles of WNUSP were formulated and formally adopted in the WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper. Also, the WNUSP Board was elected, and several WNUSP resolutions were adopted, such as against Electroshock, on Mad Pride, and against Forced Treatments.

The WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper reflects the core values and principles of WNUSP, and formed the basis for advocacy by a group of WNUSP-members in the UN Ad Hoc Committee on a Comprehensive and Integral International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (2002-2004). The Final Report of the UN Ad Hoc Committee contained a draft resolution in the form of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was later adopted at the United Nations General Assembly at 13 December 2006, and celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

WNUSP celebrates these milestone anniversaries, amongst others, by highlighting and reaffirming our commitment to the WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper, which is attached here.

The WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper originates from 1994, and was modified and formally adopted as a core position of WNUSP in 2001. Many of its points are in fact also in some form incorporated in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which is a huge milestone in WNUSPs history. The WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper represents our legacy, in the form of a strong and unified position of users/survivors from all over the world throughout decades.

Now, for the occasion of celebrating the milestone anniversaries in 2016, WNUSP is celebrating its continued commitment to the WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper, which is still a representative outline of WNUSPs core position in the present decade. Moreover, the WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper marks one of the most powerful moments in WNUSPs history, because this unified position truly empowered users/survivors in the drafting process of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which eventually led to the inclusion of the human rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities in the UN CRPD. Therefore, WNUSP is happy to celebrate the continued commitment to the WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper.

WNUSP is inviting everyone to join in the celebration-campaign, and to bring the WNUSP Human Rights Position Paper to the attention of the wider public.

With best regards,

World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry

WNUSP is reorganizing!

Dear WNUSP members and followers,

It’s great to greet you with this happy news.

WNUSP is internally reorganizing, and we are developing this Wordpress site to be the new platform for all activities related to WNUSP. So please bookmark this page, and take a look around to see what you think of it so far.

Please note that the sections: Advocacy, News and Resources have not been updated yet. This will require more attention. Most other sections have had revision already.

WNUSP is happy to include your views in the further development of this portal, and we are happy to receive news from members to be published on this website.

Also, you can take a look at the membership-section.

Early June 2016, WNUSP will kindly request all members, by email and by public channels, to re-register for the membership. In this way, we can make sure that we have all the correct and up-to-date contact information of all our members. This is done, because we are migrating our administration and website. The new membership registration form will also include a question on whether you agree to be listed in the List of WNUSP members.(see also top menu: Membership)

So stay tuned and visit this site regularly for more news and developments!
And feel free to contact us at contactwnusp@gmail.com

best wishes
Jolijn Santegoeds, Co-Chair of WNUSP
